During the semifinal race, which involved Italian Arianna Fontana and American Kristen Santos-Griswold, Selye sustained an injury to her left eye from a competitor's skate. After the incident, she received first aid on the spot and was then transported on a stretcher for further examination at a medical facility.
The judges decided to disqualify Santos-Griswold for an improper overtaking maneuver that caused the collision. Despite the incident, Fontana managed to secure second place in the semifinal and advanced to the final. Representatives of the Polish team noted that Selye's eye was not damaged; however, the situation once again drew attention to the potential risks of injuries in short track speed skating.
