Nepal to Ban Climbing Everest for Unprepared Tourists

The authorities of Nepal intend to introduce stricter rules for climbing Everest. The upper house of the parliamentary assembly has already supported a bill that will be submitted for discussion in the lower house before the elections scheduled for March 5.

According to the new regulations, climbing permits will only be granted to those climbers who have already summited at least one peak over 7,000 meters in Nepal. In addition, mandatory insurance, age restrictions, and requirements for skill level will be introduced.

The reasons for implementing such measures include the high load on the routes, the increasing number of unprepared tourists, and environmental issues. The new law will also create an environmental fund that will focus on cleaning up the Himalayas from accumulated waste.

After final approval, the document is expected to come into effect within three months.
