Preparation for the 2026 Winter Olympic Games, which will take place in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, has resulted in significant financial expenditures that have exceeded initial forecasts. According to Reuters, the reason for the increased budget is the rise in construction material prices and the need for expedited construction.

According to information provided by the CEO of the organizing committee, Andrea Varnier, the budget for preparing for the Games has significantly increased.

In 2019, when the bid was submitted, expenses were estimated at $1.3 billion; however, by the time of the Olympic opening, operational costs had risen to $1.7 billion. The main financial burden fell on the state budget, which allocated an additional $3.5 billion for infrastructure projects, including the construction of new sports facilities and roads.

The organizers noted that the path to hosting the Games has proven to be more complicated than expected. One of the biggest challenges has been the construction of the bobsled and luge track in Cortina.

Italy, despite the recommendations from the International Olympic Committee to utilize existing sports venues in neighboring countries such as Austria and Switzerland, insisted on creating its own sports center. The cost of this project increased from 50 million to 120 million euros. Additionally, under urgent conditions, the construction of the Santa Giulia hockey arena in Milan was completed, which was commissioned just a few weeks before the start of the competitions.
