FIFA to Introduce 3D Player Avatars at the 2026 World Cup

FIFA has announced the implementation of a significant technological innovation that will be applied at the 2026 World Cup. All 1,248 football players participating in the tournament will receive their individual 3D avatars. The scanning process for each player will take just one second and will be a mandatory step before the tournament begins.
These digital models are planned to be used to improve the accuracy of the semi-automatic offside detection system. Additionally, 3D avatars will allow for the creation of detailed visualizations of referees' decisions, which will be available to spectators in the stadiums and television viewers in real time.
This technology has already been successfully tested during the FIFA Intercontinental Cup, and at the upcoming World Cup, it will be applied to all matches, ensuring a higher level of transparency in officiating and making the sporting spectacle even more exciting.
