The main factors contributing to infant mortality are related to conditions occurring in the perinatal period. In January 2026, 80 infants, accounting for 63% of the total deaths, fell victim to such causes.
It is also worth noting that among the deceased, 24 babies (19%) died from congenital anomalies, 13 (10%) from respiratory diseases, and 4 from diseases of the nervous system. One child was a victim of an accident, and another of an infectious disease. The causes of death for five babies remain unspecified.
As of the end of 2025, the country has noted a decrease in infant mortality; however, at the same time, there has been an increase in maternal mortality.
The Ministry of Health plans to reform the perinatal service by 2030. Among the priority tasks are:
- improving the monitoring system for pregnant women and routing of patients;
- reviewing the standards for antenatal care with an emphasis on the quality of medical services;
- implementing modern technologies for prenatal screening;
- establishing a genetic laboratory;
- developing family planning programs.
