The Resistance of Bacteria to Antibiotics is Growing. What is Being Proposed for Bishkek

Antibiotic resistance (AMR) is one of the most pressing threats to global health and requires a comprehensive approach at the national level. This conclusion was reached by the authors of a study published in the journal "Healthcare of Kyrgyzstan," which analyzes the current situation and proposes possible solutions for the capital.

During the study, it was found that the increase in the share of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is already negatively affecting the effectiveness of treatment and creating risks for complex medical procedures, such as surgical operations and chemotherapy. According to international data, one in six laboratory-confirmed bacterial infections does not respond to standard therapy, with low- and middle-income countries being the most affected.

Among the most dangerous are gram-negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli and Klebsiella, which show high resistance to important classes of antibiotics, including cephalosporins and carbapenems.

The need for a systematic approach includes the standardization of laboratory methods, the creation of a list of priority pathogens, and the implementation of effective mechanisms for data collection and analysis.

The study also identified a number of issues concerning Bishkek as the largest medical center in the country. These include a lack of systematic data on resistance, fragmentation of information between public and private laboratories, limited access for doctors to aggregated data, and weak links with programs on the rational use of antibiotics and infection control.

As a solution, the researchers propose developing an antibiotic resistance monitoring system that will be adapted to the conditions of Kyrgyzstan and meet international standards. This includes creating a unified city database, identifying priority pathogens, and improving information exchange between medical institutions.

According to the authors, Bishkek could become a testing ground for implementing this model, which in the future would allow for its expansion to other regions of the country and enhance the resilience of the national healthcare system to the problem of antibiotic resistance.
