In the Chuy region, sport fishermen are noticing an increase in the population of the American mink.

In the water bodies located in the Alamudun and Sokuluk districts, not far from Bishkek, this predator feels right at home.

“We had just started to settle on the shore for fishing when a nimble black creature unexpectedly approached us. It completely ignored us and began to explore our belongings, fishing rods, and bait. Not finding anything interesting, it ran along the shore and disappeared into the reeds,” the fishermen recounted.

A similar situation occurred at another water body with this black predator.

“The American mink is an invasive species that was introduced to Kyrgyzstan from North America. This active predator hunts year-round and is capable of catching nearly any prey—from fish and birds to frogs and snakes. It swims and dives excellently. Currently, the American mink is actively colonizing the Chuy Valley, displacing local predators,” explained ecologist Alexander Sosnovsky.
