The Khan's Koshuluk Buried in the Mountains of Kyrgyzstan — What His Mausoleum Looks Like on the Altyn-Mazar Pasture
On the monument erected at the grave of Kushluk khan, there is information about his life. It states that he was Tayaндын уулу Kүchlүk, the khan of the Naiman tribe, who fought against Chinggis Khan for over 25 years. After the war with Chinggis Khan in the Kангай-Тоо mountains in 1204-1205, he led his people to the Ala-Tuu mountains to save them. From 1211 to 1218, he held the title of gurgan of the Karakhanid state, residing in the territory of the ancient city of Balasagun. Kүchlүk (Kushluk) khan lived approximately from 1170 to 1218.
Historian and resident of the Toktogul district, Abdulla uulu, noted that the issue of the burial site of Kushluk khan has become relevant in connection with the demarcation work of the Kyrgyz-Tajik border. He mentioned that a study about Kushluk khan was conducted based on French and Arabic sources, which led to the publication of a book by Musa Sapaev. In 2023, representatives of the Naiman tribe from Kazakhstan visited this site and brought soil from Altai, placing it on the grave of Kushluk khan.
In parliament, a deputy of the Jogorku Kenesh raised the issue that the grave and mausoleum are located in a disputed territory between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. Toktogul Abdulla uulu reminded that Altyn-Mazar has been a subject of disputes since the presidency of Askar Akayev.
Deputy Akkulu Berdiev, representing the "Butun Kyrgyzstan" party, also drew attention to this situation in his speech on September 18, 2024, at a session of the Jogorku Kenesh, emphasizing that the grave of Kushluk khan is of great significance for the history of the Kyrgyz people. He noted that previously tools and written sources related to the khan were sold off, and now there are attempts to export his remains abroad. The deputy expressed concern about how the state protects this historical site.
Minister of Culture, Information, Sports, and Youth Policy Altynbek Maksutov stated that it is necessary to adopt appropriate laws to protect historical heritage. He reminded that two years ago an agreement was signed between Central Asian countries regarding the transfer of historical heritage in case of its theft.
In 2018, it was reported that 51-year-old Kozhon Nasirov guards the mausoleum of Kushluk khan. This place, known as Altyn Mazar, attracts people from Uzbekistan and Russia who come to pay homage to the holy sites. Kushluk khan was also referred to as Kүchü Biiy.
Poet Musa Sapaev noted that eight centuries ago, Kushluk khan was buried here after leading his people from Altai to protect them from the troops of Chinggis Khan. He added that all houses and mausoleums in Altyn-Mazar were destroyed by atheist squads in 1934, and the mausoleum of Kushluk khan was restored in 2017 in honor of the 800th anniversary of his death. A golden crescent is placed on the mausoleum, which, according to legend, was cast by the descendants of Kushluk khan from gold brought from Kashgar and placed above his grave. This site also features a mosque built six centuries ago, the walls of which have been preserved, but the roof is in poor condition.
