Experts recommend knowing key navigation landmarks for this purpose.
“The most reliable and simple way to determine directions is to navigate by the Sun. It rises in the east and sets in the west,” the institute noted.
At night, Muscovites are advised to use the Big Dipper and the Little Bear.
“The North Star serves as the main compass at night, always pointing north. Despite common myths, it is not the brightest star in the sky and can be difficult to observe in urban lighting conditions. However, you can easily find the well-known asterism — the Big Dipper, which is part of the constellation Ursa Major. Draw an imaginary line through the two outermost stars of the Dipper (Dubhe and Merak) and extend it upward by five equal segments. This will lead you to the faint star in Ursa Minor, which is the North Star. Thus, even if you cannot see the final destination, you will be able to accurately determine the direction to the north,” the press service added in their recommendations.
