Every time garages are demolished, residents are promised transformations: new parking lots, green spaces, schools, and kindergartens, as well as improvements to the road infrastructure.
The editorial team of Kaktus.media decided to recall what exactly was promised to the residents of Bishkek in exchange for the demolished garages and what the results of those promises are.
First demolition: for the sake of improving the city
The first major demolition of garages in Bishkek took place in 2019. At that time, the authorities demolished the cooperatives "Vasyuki" and "Veterans," whose members are participants and veterans of the Great Patriotic War. These garages were located on Tugolbaya Ata Street (formerly known as Lineynaya). The demolition was justified by plans to construct a road along the railway as part of the second phase of the "Development of the Street and Road Network of Bishkek" project.
Other capital structures were also demolished, including a car wash, six individual residential houses, five hotels, a non-residential premises, and a factory. However, the demolition process turned out to be complicated, as all the necessary construction documents had been obtained officially, and to achieve their goal, the city administration had to go to court.
On the site of the demolished garages, the authorities plan to build a school for 1,200 students using the republican budget. Furthermore, the city administration claims that a park will be established along Patrice Lumumba Street, although the timeline for its implementation has not yet been determined.
