Attack on Iran. UN Security Council did not adopt the Russian draft resolution calling for a ceasefire.
Four countries supported the draft: Russia, China, Pakistan, and Somalia. At the same time, nine states abstained from voting, while the USA and Latvia voted against the resolution.
For the successful adoption of the resolution, a minimum of nine votes in favor and no vetoes from permanent members, including the USA, Russia, China, the UK, and France, are required.
The draft resolution includes four main points. It calls for an immediate cessation of military activity by all parties and for avoiding further escalation in the Middle East and beyond. The document also condemns attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure and calls for their protection in accordance with international law. The importance of ensuring the security of states in the Middle East and beyond is also emphasized in the resolution, which strongly urges an immediate resumption of negotiations and the active use of political and diplomatic means.
On February 28, a military operation by the United States and Israel against Iran began. Strikes were aimed at major Iranian cities, including the capital. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps responded to these actions by attacking Israeli targets. American military bases in Bahrain, Jordan, Qatar, Kuwait, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia were also hit. As a result of the strikes on Iran, the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and several other high-ranking officials were killed, further escalating the conflict in the region.
