On March 11, a special high-level event took place in Vienna as part of the 69th session of the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs, dedicated to the topic: "Developing Early Warning Systems for New Synthetic Drugs and Psychoactive Substances: The Role of the UN and SCO."
According to information from the Drug Control Service of Kyrgyzstan, this event was organized at the initiative of Kyrgyzstan, which will chair the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in 2026, with the support of the SCO Secretariat and the UNODC.
During the discussions, participants emphasized that the rapid growth of new synthetic drugs and psychoactive substances poses serious challenges for the international drug control system and requires the development of effective response mechanisms.
The discussion highlighted the need to create national and regional early warning mechanisms that can quickly identify new drugs, analyze risks, and ensure timely preventive and law enforcement measures.
Additionally, the importance of international cooperation, the exchange of analytical information, and coordination of actions between states and international organizations was noted to increase effectiveness in combating the illegal trafficking of synthetic drugs.
