Cows with Fever — A Farmer from the Chui Region Talks About an Animal Disease Affecting Milk Acceptance by Large Enterprises
Elmira Abdyjaparova, a farmer who has been engaged in dairy cattle breeding for many years, shared her experience in a comment to Turmush. According to her, the disease is actively spreading among cows. “Cows have a high temperature, they have become aggressive and sick, with ulcers in the mouth and on their legs. The situation this year is significantly worse than in previous years. My cows were also sick, but now they have recovered. We were able to start delivering milk to the factories again after inspection. When the cows are sick, we do not sell the milk. I heard that vaccination this year was ineffective, which worsened the situation. Because of this, Kazakhstan closed the border, and livestock supplies through Russia were halted. Prices for animals have increased, which will certainly lead to higher meat prices. The government must strictly monitor the health of livestock and carry out vaccinations. Perhaps some animal owners are saving on treatment,” she noted.
The Issyk-Ata district state administration noted that one of the largest dairy enterprises in the republic operates in their territory. There is also a dairy plant in Kant. According to the information received, these enterprises continue to accept milk from farmers. As for the disease, the situation is stable: all suspicious animals are under the control of veterinarians, and vaccination continues. Currently, milk is being accepted at a price ranging from 42 to 44 soms depending on fat content.
The Sokuluk district administration also reported that there are three dairy processing enterprises in their area that continue to purchase milk. The situation with the disease has stabilized, all suspicious animals are under veterinary supervision, and vaccination continues. Milk is accepted at a price ranging from 42 to 47 soms, depending on fat content.

In mid-February 2026, farmers in the At-Bashinsky district of the Naryn region reported mass cases of cows suffering from a severe form of an unknown disease. They expressed dissatisfaction that the authorities are not taking sufficient measures to address this problem.
Aibek Jumaliev, a resident of the village of Kalinin in the At-Bashinsky district, noted: “This time the disease manifested in a very severe form. Previously, mainly cows suffered, but now it affects the udder and hooves — the livestock cannot move normally, and the condition of the animals is critical.
Farmers are in despair and do not know what to do. The disease continues to progress, and if urgent measures are not taken, the situation may become even more serious. This disease has already begun to spread to sheep.
For example, I have 5 cows and 5 calves sick, my brother has 10 cows and the calves are also suffering. In the nearby villages, the situation is similar; according to people, up to 80% of the livestock is sick.”
Ulanbek Sokeiev, also a resident of the At-Bashinsky district, added:
“Now cows, sheep, and even young lambs are getting sick. The injections being given are not yielding results. People are losing livestock and incurring losses. Pastures are becoming contaminated. It would be good if the work on disposing of dead livestock were conducted systematically.
It is necessary to figure out why veterinary drugs are not helping. It seems that there is no control over the quality of these drugs and their origin in Kyrgyzstan.
Moreover, if the meat of sick animals is sent for processing, what will happen to people? Will this lead to diseases among the population? I am not sure anyone is thinking about this. Livestock diseases can have serious consequences for human health.”
To obtain additional data, we contacted the Naryn regional veterinary department. They reported:
“Cases of livestock disease are being recorded in the district. Specialists are taking the necessary measures. Currently, laboratory tests are being conducted at the A. Duyshiev Scientific Institute to clarify the diagnosis.”
Kenzhebek Kachkynbaev, deputy akim of the At-Bashinsky district for agriculture, noted:
“This disease is being registered throughout the republic. It arrived in our district last week. This is a new form of the disease, spreading faster than the previous one. The vaccine has not yet been administered to cows.
In our experience, the disease is treatable. With the correct application of penicillin, bicillin, and special sprays, we can achieve quick recovery.
Previously, cases of the disease were recorded in Chuy and other regions. In the Naryn region, the disease is also spreading, but there are recovering animals. If the vaccine arrives soon, it will cover all livestock, and the situation will stabilize.”
The veterinary service for livestock development, pastures, and feed under the Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry reported that complete information will be provided next Monday, as laboratory tests are currently being conducted.
No official response from the veterinary service has been received yet.
