A flock of 9 swans was spotted for the first time in the Zhayil District
According to local residents, these swans were spotted in early December. Initially, people believed they were just making a stop during migration. However, time passed, the air temperature dropped, and the flock remained at the water body. Currently, a small group of 8–9 swans inhabits the pond. “We thought they would fly away, but they decided to stay for the winter. Now we come to see them every day. This has become a real attraction for our village,” local residents share their emotions.
The unusual appearance of the swans has attracted the attention of both adults and children. Many come to the pond specifically to observe these rare birds for the area.
Tatyana Tarabrina, the chief specialist of the Chuy-Bishkek Department of Chemicalization, Plant Protection, and Quarantine for the Jayyl district, noted that it is difficult to definitively explain the reasons for the swans' appearance. “Swans are migratory birds. It is surprising that they appeared in the middle of winter. Perhaps they were heading to another place or were returning and made a stop here. December was quite warm, and the severe frosts lasted only about ten days. These conditions may have been favorable for wintering,” she added.
She also suggests that the group of swans may have separated from the main flock, as these birds usually migrate in large groups with a leader and a clear hierarchy.
The specialist believes that changes in climatic conditions are increasingly affecting the migration routes of swans. Recent winters have become less harsh, and birds are more frequently stopping at water bodies where they find ample food and relatively warm water.
Tatyana reported that swans had not been observed in the village of Stepnoye before. In summer, the ponds in this area often dry up, as water is used for irrigating agricultural land. Therefore, the conditions for the permanent habitation of large waterfowl are not always suitable. “We have seen cranes and herons, but never swans. Nevertheless, the village of Stepnoye is characterized by a large amount of greenery and trees, which creates a comfortable environment. Perhaps the combination of a mild winter and a calm pond is why the swans decided to stay. We will need to monitor their behavior: whether they will continue their journey with the onset of warmth or remain here. For a more accurate analysis of the situation, observations by ornithologists are necessary. However, in any case, the appearance of swans is a rare and beautiful phenomenon that has become a pleasant surprise for all residents of the Jayyl district,” she concluded.
