In Kyrgyzstan, 96 percent of domestic violence reports come from women

In 2025, Kyrgyzstan recorded 10,164 cases of domestic violence, which is 35% higher than the figure for 2024.

According to information provided by the Crisis Center "Sezim," the official statistics on violence in the country do not reflect the real situation.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kyrgyzstan, over 96% of all domestic violence reports come from women.

However, even these figures represent only a small part of the reality. In the regions, cases of violence are recorded significantly less frequently than in the capital, Bishkek. This does not mean that violence is less common there—on the contrary, in remote areas, women often face pressure from their families, social stigma, fear of "shaming" their loved ones, and a lack of safe places to seek help.

As reported by specialists at the center, women in rural areas may endure violence for many years without seeking help—due to fear, shame, or societal norms that prevent them from speaking about their experiences.

The statistics do not account for many cases occurring behind closed doors: threats, psychological pressure, economic manipulation, constant humiliation, silence under pressure from relatives, and pleas not to "destroy the family."

“Thus, the official data creates the illusion that most violence occurs in Bishkek. However, this is not true—it merely reflects the varying willingness of women to seek help,” the center's statement notes.
