Residents of HPP-5 Record Abnormally Early Arrival of Swallows: Ecologist's Explanation
“Around the 5th Hydroelectric Power Station, we saw swallows in the sky. They usually appear no earlier than the end of March,” local residents reported.
The situation has left people puzzled: “What is happening to nature?” they are asking.
Ecologist Alexander Sosnovsky explains that such an early arrival may indicate that spring will be warm this year and will come earlier.
“Swallows feed on insects, which they catch not only in the air but also on the ground, on grass and branches, as well as on building walls, using their magnificent flying abilities. Naturally, weather conditions affect the number of flying insects, which, in turn, impacts the swallows. It is precisely the specifics of their diet that explain why they usually arrive later, when the frost-free period is established,” he added.
In Kyrgyzstan, migratory swallows appear at the end of March, while nesting species arrive at the end of April. The period from nest building to the fledging of chicks takes about two months.
According to A. Sosnovsky, there are 30 species of swallows in the world, of which 5 nest in Kyrgyzstan.
