The importance of the regional conference taking place in Bishkek cannot be overstated: it brings together representatives of governments, international organizations, experts, and youth to discuss the role of education in strengthening peace and security. This was stated by Biljana Milosevic, head of the Regional Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Central Asia.
Milosevic noted that in the context of increasing armed conflicts and global tensions, such events help raise awareness about the humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapon use and foster dialogue on disarmament and non-proliferation.
“Kyrgyzstan occupies an important place in this area, being one of the countries that signed the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. This confirms its commitment to international disarmament efforts and global security. The holding of the conference underscores Kyrgyzstan's leadership and its contribution to promoting peace through education and cooperation,” she added.
Furthermore, Milosevic emphasized that the ICRC operates worldwide, increasing knowledge about international humanitarian law and the consequences of weapon use, including nuclear weapons. “We work with governments, armed forces, universities, and civil society organizations, supporting educational initiatives that promote respect for humanitarian principles and law in armed conflict situations. We also advocate for more effective implementation of international disarmament agreements and call for the complete elimination of nuclear weapons due to their catastrophic humanitarian consequences,” she concluded.Today, the conference "Education for Peace and Security" is taking place in Bishkek, timed to coincide with the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.
The event is organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic with the support of the OSCE Program Office in Bishkek and the International Committee of the Red Cross in Central Asia.
