In honor of International Women's Day, celebrated on March 8, Annalena Baerbock, the President of the UN General Assembly, announces a new campaign under the hashtag #LikeAWoman. The main goal of this initiative is to highlight the achievements of women around the world in various fields.
According to the UN News Service, for centuries, the expressions "like a woman" and "like a girl" have been used in a derogatory context, implying weakness or limited social roles. However, in reality, women excel by demonstrating leadership qualities and achieving impressive results while overcoming barriers that men do not face.
Research shows that when women participate in peace processes, the agreements reached are more sustainable. Economic indicators also improve when women play an active role in shaping the economy. Gender equality for women and girls leads to more peaceful and prosperous societies.
The #LikeAWoman campaign aims to change entrenched stereotypes by presenting stories of inspiring women from different fields and regions who successfully overcome challenges.
In the lead-up to International Women's Day and during the 70th session of the Commission on the Status of Women, which will take place in New York from March 9 to 19, Annalena Baerbock will share on her Instagram photos of successful women and their quotes.
Examples of these inspiring statements include: "I was told that women don't belong in the news department. So I took the editor-in-chief's chair"; "I was told that I couldn't reach the stars. So I flew into space."
Annalena Baerbock is the fifth woman in history to hold the position of President of the UN General Assembly and the first from Western Europe to achieve this role. Previously, she served as Germany's Foreign Minister.
