100th Anniversary: The Main Zoo Museum of Kyrgyzstan Needs a New Building
At a recent parliamentary meeting, Deputy Seid Atambaev raised the issue of the extremely poor condition of the museum. He noted that there has been no major renovation for two decades.
“The worn-out display cases can pose health risks to children and school students who come for excursions,” the deputy emphasized.
Atambaev urged the government to pay attention to the unique exhibits that are currently at risk of damage.
Representatives of the National Academy of Sciences explained that during the major renovation of the main building of the academy, the museum premises were also updated. However, the display cases with exhibits have suffered significantly and cannot ensure safety for visitors.
“Many events are planned for the anniversary. The shelves with animals and birds will be updated, and new collections will be introduced. A figure of a mammoth, whose remains were found in Ak-Suu, will also be recreated,” the academy added.
Furthermore, the National Academy of Sciences emphasizes that the large collection of reptiles and mammals of Kyrgyzstan can no longer fit in the existing halls.
“In the future, we plan to build a large Nature Museum in Bishkek, which could be located in one of the parks or the Botanical Garden. We have already developed a project for the building, which will be designed in the form of a seven-story yurt,” the academy concluded.
The zoological museum, founded in 1926, is the oldest scientific institution in the system of the National Academy of Sciences of Kyrgyzstan. Its collections feature a unique array of fauna from the Tien Shan, including rare specimens of snow leopards and endemic birds. Currently, the museum occupies an important place as the largest repository of zoological standards in Central Asia, which have global scientific significance.
