Why have eggs in Kyrgyzstan become 'golden'? Three reasons named
Currently, the price for a dozen eggs ranges from 160 to 170 soms, whereas just a month ago it did not exceed 140 soms. For consumers, this significant price increase has come as a surprise, and many are expressing concern about the prices of this staple product, awaiting explanations and improvements in the market situation.

If a month ago, a dozen small eggs could be purchased for 80-90 soms, today the minimum price is 110 soms.

What does the Ministry of Agriculture say about the price increase?

In the Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry, they explain the price increase by the rise in demand in Kazakhstan and Russia, where both wholesale and retail prices for eggs are also increasing.

“The wholesale price has increased from 10 to 12 soms per egg. On the positive side, this increase will help restore the financial state of domestic producers, who faced low prices and the risk of bankruptcy last year,” the ministry noted.

According to the ministry's information, Kyrgyzstan is 80% self-sufficient in chicken eggs.

Opinions of poultry farmers

The editorial team of Kaktus.media spoke with local poultry farmers, who highlighted several factors contributing to the rise in egg prices.

The first factor is the rising cost of feed, which is imported from Kazakhstan. Although the government has exempted feed from VAT to support poultry farmers, costs remain high.

The second factor is avian influenza, which has caused illnesses in Russia, Kazakhstan, and other countries, leading to the culling of many birds.

“There is a global shortage, and the demand for eggs has sharply increased. This is also reflected in prices. Even in Japan, one of the most developed countries, the situation is similar,” the poultry farmers note.

According to them, last year Kazakhstan actively purchased eggs from Kyrgyzstan; now exports are mainly directed there.

Nevertheless, domestic producers must prioritize meeting the needs of the domestic market, including supermarkets and regions.

The third aspect is the increase in egg consumption over the past two years. People have become more health-conscious and are including eggs more frequently in their diets, which also increases domestic demand.

“Overall, the rise in egg prices is linked to global trends, rising feed prices, and increasing demand,” the poultry farmers concluded.

Poultry farmers also noted that to stabilize the market situation, dialogue between the Ministry of Agriculture and antimonopoly authorities is necessary. It is important to determine whether the issues are related to a decline in production or other factors in order to take appropriate measures.
