Our People Abroad: Deputy Head of the Ayil Okmotu from the Tyup District, Jamila Toktorbai Kyzy, Went to Study in Japan and is Receiving a Scholarship of 1000 Dollars
In an interview with a Turmush correspondent, Jamila shared that she went to Japan with her family as part of a government program that allows her to complete a two-year master's degree.
She was born in 1991 in the Alai district of the Osh region and talked about her path to success and professional life.
“I started my studies in the village of Taldyk in the Kara-Suu district and then continued in Bishkek. After the 9th grade, I graduated from the computer department of the Kyrgyz-Turkish vocational college for girls, then I entered the Kyrgyz State University of Geology, Mining, and Natural Resource Development, obtaining a qualification as a geological engineer. Alongside my studies, I enrolled in a four-year course at the Kyrgyz-Japanese Center for Human Resource Development, where I studied the Japanese language up to the third level,” she said.
After graduating from university in 2014, Jamila began her career in November of that year, working as a geologist at the Ministry of Natural Resources. She then continued her work at OJSC "Kyrgyzaltyn." Later, she got married and took a position in the village administration, where she became the deputy head and responsible secretary.
Jamila noted that life in the countryside with her husband brings her joy, and her family has not been an obstacle to her career growth.
“My husband and I met when I was a student doing geological practice. He was already working at that time. In 2015, we got married, lived in the capital for three years, and in 2018 we returned to my native village of Mikhailovka. Since my husband is the only son in the family, I agreed to move to the village. I also love nature, so I quickly adapted to life in the countryside, where I engage in agriculture and livestock farming. We have two sons and one daughter,” she noted.
Jamila shared that her hard work and efforts have yielded results after 10 years. She is currently receiving education and gaining experience in Japan, actively immersing herself in the culture of the country.
“In 2025, I learned about the JDS program and decided to participate in the competition. Knowledge of the English language was necessary for the exams. After going through several stages and using the knowledge I had previously acquired, I managed to receive a scholarship. I first arrived in the Japanese city of Tsukuba in August and started studying, and three months later, my husband brought the children. Now they are studying at school, and my husband works here,” she said.
The culture of Japan has impressed Jamila's family. She noted that at school, children wash the dishes after meals and sort packaging for recycling, which fosters diligence in the younger generation. According to her, adults wake up early and work a lot. She also observed a high culture of waiting—sometimes people wait in line for up to two hours. Jamila is proud to participate in this program and is aware of her responsibility: “Upon returning to my homeland, I intend to share the experience I gain during my studies.”
This master's program focuses on science, technology, and environmental protection. The scholarship amounts to $1,000 per month, and the children receive state benefits, allowing the family to live comfortably.
“We love to ride bicycles around the city. On weekends, we spend time together as a family and participate in cultural events. Recently, I visited Taiwan,” she added.
Jamila has already adapted to Japanese cuisine, and during this time, the cherry blossoms are blooming, which fills her with admiration. She expressed gratitude to her family, husband, parents, and colleagues for their support in realizing this dream,” she concluded.
