On the air of "Birinchi Radio," sanitary doctor Maria Kushubakova, who works in the department of disease prevention and sanitary-epidemiological supervision, raised an important issue regarding the proper choice of backpacks for schoolchildren.

According to her, the problem with backpacks has become quite relevant.

“It is rare to find schoolchildren with light backpacks. Almost all of them have heavy backpacks, as the curriculum requires many textbooks,” noted Kushubakova.

She provided data on the permissible weight of backpacks depending on the grade levels:

However, in practice, the weight of backpacks for younger schoolchildren reaches 3-4 kg, and sometimes even more. This is due to the fact that children carry all their textbooks and additional materials. Therefore, it is important to choose quality backpacks. They should fit well against the back, the upper part should not press on the neck, and the lower part should be at waist level. The straps should be adjustable,” she added.

Kushubakova also warned that if the back of the head constantly presses against the backpack, it may lead to pressure on the cervical vertebrae.

“There are vessels running there, and the child may develop symptoms such as drowsiness and apathy, up to loss of consciousness,” emphasized the doctor. “Girls should avoid carrying bags on one shoulder. The load should be evenly distributed on both shoulders; otherwise, it may lead to various forms of scoliosis. According to statistics, about 50% of school graduates have scoliosis problems. Spinal deformation can negatively affect the functioning of internal organs, so the choice of a backpack should be very careful.”

It is also worth noting that in Kyrgyzstan, due to the transition to a 12-year school education system, textbooks are being updated. On social media, parents have begun to express dissatisfaction regarding the heavy and bulky new textbooks.
