In Kyrgyzstan, school uniforms are being discussed again. A doctor's opinion
Previously, deputy Dastan Bekeshev suggested revising the requirements for school clothing. He noted that educational institutions often focus on the uniform rather than the content of education. Bekeshev called on the Ministry of Education and the government to allow schools to decide on clothing issues themselves and to develop appropriate regulatory documents. In response, he was told that a classic uniform "contributes to the formation of discipline and reduces social differences among students."
Kushubakova emphasized that the style of school clothing should be businesslike and secular. "Why is this important? We are a secular state, and the uniform should not highlight religious symbols or affiliation with informal groups. Clothing should not contain provocative elements. For example, torn jeans and other trendy attributes are inappropriate in school uniforms. It should consist of shirts, suits, trousers, and skirts," explained the sanitary doctor.
The specialist also noted that according to feedback from parents and students themselves, many would prefer a more relaxed style of clothing instead of a standardized school uniform. "Currently, young people are fond of things like boho: wide trousers and hoodies. This does not promote proper posture and can negatively affect the self-esteem and psychological state of both students and adults. If the clothing matches their taste, it creates comfort and a positive mood. Therefore, parents should not impose a uniform, but it is important for them to understand this," added Kushubakova.
She also reminded that currently, state requirements do not mandate wearing any specific clothing.
"The problem lies in the choice of fabric. Unfortunately, most parents focus on price, opting for cheaper clothing that often contains a lot of synthetic materials. We always emphasize that children's clothing should be made from natural fabrics—cotton, wool, viscose. This is important, even if the price of such fabrics is higher. The health of children should be a priority, as comfortable clothing allows students to concentrate on their studies. Discomfort from synthetic fabrics can distract and cause irritation," concluded the sanitary doctor.
Kushubakova also highlighted that clothing should be chosen according to size. "Often, parents buy clothes for growth, including backpacks, trousers, and shirts. An unsuitable size causes discomfort for the child. Therefore, it is important to choose clothing that fits and to prefer natural fabrics. When it comes to children's clothing, one should not skimp," she summarized.
