The festival organizers noted that Park Chan-wook's appointment underscores Cannes' significant commitment to Korean cinema. "Korea is a powerful cinematic nation, whose creations delight audiences and continue to be rediscovered time and again," the statement said. The country has demonstrated its ability to produce outstanding contemporary films that draw huge crowds to theaters.
The film "Oldboy" was awarded the Grand Prix at the Cannes Festival in 2004, and Park Chan-wook has received various awards at the same festival for his works "Thirst," "The Handmaiden," and "Decision to Leave."
