At the 79th Cannes Film Festival, which will take place from May 12 to May 23, 2026, the jury chair will be South Korean director Park Chan-wook. He is known for his film "Oldboy" and will be the first person from South Korea to hold this position in the history of Cannes.

The festival organizers noted that Park Chan-wook's appointment underscores Cannes' significant commitment to Korean cinema. "Korea is a powerful cinematic nation, whose creations delight audiences and continue to be rediscovered time and again," the statement said. The country has demonstrated its ability to produce outstanding contemporary films that draw huge crowds to theaters.

The film "Oldboy" was awarded the Grand Prix at the Cannes Festival in 2004, and Park Chan-wook has received various awards at the same festival for his works "Thirst," "The Handmaiden," and "Decision to Leave."
