The initiative to name the National Institute of Heart Surgery and Organ Transplantation (NIIHSTO) after the renowned cardiac surgeon Isa Akhunbaev was announced by the head of the Independent Medical Union, Bermet Baryktabasova, in an appeal to the editorial office of Kaktus.media.
The appeal states: "We, followers of the school of Isa Konoevich Akhunbaev, propose to name the National Institute of Heart Surgery and Organ Transplantation in his honor. This decision should be perceived not only as a tribute to his memory but also as a strategic step that will unite the professional community and determine the direction of high technology development in medicine in Kyrgyzstan."

Isa Konoevich Akhunbaev is considered the founder of cardiac surgery in Kyrgyzstan, as he performed the first heart surgery in Central Asia (commissurotomy for mitral stenosis) in 1959, which brought the republic's medical practice to an international level.

The appeal emphasizes that "NIIHSTO embodies the dream and scientific achievements laid down by Akhunbaev in the thoracic surgery department in the 1960s. Naming the institute after the founder will confirm its status as the main heir of this school and highlight that cardiac surgery is a high-tech discipline with its own history and a founder who possesses significant ethical and scientific authority in the country," the document notes.

Those who signed the appeal also pointed out that Akhunbaev's name is known beyond Kyrgyzstan and is highly valued in the international scientific community, especially in the CIS and the Turkic world. "A named institute will simplify the establishment of international connections, obtaining grants, and joining international associations of cardiothoracic surgeons. This will become a brand for Kyrgyzstan, ensuring the continuity of the school and supporting ethical ideals, as Akhunbaev was known for his dedication to patients," the cardiac surgeons believe.

Furthermore, the appeal emphasizes that "for the surgeons of NIIHSTO, the name of Akhunbaev has served as a moral compass for over 50 years." His journey from a simple shepherd to an academic and a legend in surgery is an inspiring story.

The creation of a "cult of professionalism" around Akhunbaev's name contributes to the formation of a corporate culture within the institute, focused on results and continuous learning, which is crucial for saving lives. The name of the great ancestor obliges adherence to international standards and unites the country's cardiac surgical forces," the appeal states.

Thus, naming the institute will solidify national scientific traditions, enhance the international recognition of the school, and create a brand for Kyrgyz cardiac surgery, as well as repay a debt to the person who laid the foundations of healthcare in the republic.
