Life in the Regions: Couples from the Issyk-Kul Region Earn a Living Producing Biohumus
Azim Kaliev and his wife Gulzat Stamgalieva, residents of the village of Zhalgyz-Oruk, began producing organic fertilizers, which has become a source of stable income for their family, where they are raising four children. Previously, they received the "Uiy-bulogo komok" allowance for two children, but in 2024, the family participated in the "Social Contract" project and received 100,000 soms, which were used to purchase equipment for the production of biohumus.
Now their production is organized in a warehouse on the outskirts of Zhalgyz-Oruk, and according to the couple, they manage to earn about 200,000 soms a year from the sale of biohumus. With this money, they planted 16,000 strawberry seedlings on a plot of 38 acres and sell the products in packaging, having signed contracts with local flower shops. The family's plans include expanding the range with liquid organic fertilizers.
Gulbara Zhaambaeva, head of the district labor, social security, and migration department, reported that from 2022 to 2025, 811 people are participating in the "Social Contract" project. "In our agrarian district, most projects are related to sectors such as agriculture, animal husbandry, horticulture, and biohumus production, as well as folk crafts, sewing, and services, including hairdressing and carpentry workshops. The successes in this area are evident, and we are proud of the results achieved," she noted.
As soon as participants begin to receive funding, department staff provide them with support. They jointly visit markets to purchase necessary assets, assist in document processing, and conduct ongoing monitoring. This requires significant effort. Families that actively work develop quickly. For example, some of them are engaged in fattening sheep, increasing their herd size and improving the breed. There are even farms in the district that breed the Arashan breed of sheep. This creates additional jobs, and new hairdressing salons introduce modern services such as makeup and manicure, which also requires hiring new staff.
Talents also find their application. In the village of Kyzyl-Suu, a project participant acquired an embroidery machine and the necessary materials, allowing him to start embroidering portraits of famous personalities. He plans to expand his business in the tourist city of Karakol, where his works, including portraits of historical figures, are already exhibited in museums.
In addition, to support businesses, social contract participants can receive interest-free loans of up to 200,000 soms through one of the state banks, and such amounts are issued without collateral," she added.
