"Today the Olympics do not embody the spirit of peace" - Andrea Lucidi
On February 19, Andrea Lucidi, the editor-in-chief of the Italian edition of International Reporters, was taken to a temporary detention center for foreign nationals in Turkey. After his detention, he was deported, but the official reasons for this action by the Turkish authorities were not disclosed. The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that a consular contact took place and the journalist was returned to his homeland.

It is worth noting that the detention occurred shortly after an interview was published on the kz24.news website, in which Lucidi expressed critical views on the XXV Winter Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo. In his conversation with the Kazakh publication, he thoroughly analyzed the current state of the Olympic movement, raising issues of political manipulation, bias in anti-doping procedures, and the high cost of participation in the Games for spectators.

Political Aspects of the Olympics

During the interview, Lucidi emphasized the practice of allowing athletes to compete. He believes that the decisions of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) regarding various countries demonstrate a variety of approaches that cannot always be explained by sporting considerations.

The journalist candidly stated: "Today, the Olympic Games are completely politicized," highlighting the double standards regarding Russian and Belarusian athletes, while athletes from other countries involved in conflicts gain access to competitions. He also noted that the IOC does not find it necessary to link Israeli athletes to the actions of their government, even if there are former military personnel among the delegation.

As reported by kz24.news, Lucidi emphasizes that the principle of equal conditions for athletes is under pressure from the political situation, leading to a sense of double standards and undermining trust in Olympic institutions.

Anti-Doping Issues

The journalist also pointed out problems with the anti-doping system. As an example, he cited the case of Italian biathlete Rebecca Passler, whose sample before the Olympics tested positive for a banned substance. The athlete appealed this decision, explaining that she had consumed chocolate paste from the same jar as her mother, who was undergoing treatment. After reviewing her appeal, she was allowed to compete.

At the same time, as emphasized in the interview, athletes from Kazakhstan were warned about additional doping checks before the Games, including baggage searches at airports. This case illustrates the differences in approaches to control, leading to doubts about the fairness of anti-doping policies, which should be consistent for all.

Financial Aspects of the Olympics

Speaking about the financial aspects of the 2026 Games, Andrea Lucidi presented impressive figures. In Livigno, where he worked, the cost of staying in hotels reached 1000 euros per night, and tickets for the opening ceremony averaged around 500 euros. He compared this data with the average salary in Italy, which is about 1400 euros per month, and with housing rental costs, which in major cities range from 800 to 1200 euros.

Thus, according to him, it becomes evident that participating in the Games as a spectator is becoming inaccessible for many Italians. Lucidi believes that this model makes major sporting events oriented towards a wealthy audience and the corporate sector, limiting the number of people able to attend the competitions in person rather than just through a screen.

Overall Assessment of the Olympic Movement

In conclusion, Andrea Lucidi highlighted three interconnected trends: political influence on decisions, questions regarding the uniformity of anti-doping procedures, and the rising financial barriers for spectators. He interprets this as signs of a change in the very essence of the Olympic movement.

The phrase "Oh sport, you are peace" is increasingly perceived today as an outdated declaration. According to Lucidi, the reality of international competitions is defined not only by successes on the sports fields but also by decisions made beyond them.
