Sergey Vakunov, the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Russia in Bishkek, stated that the expansion of the Kant airbase in Kyrgyzstan is not necessary. According to him, the current capabilities of the base fully meet the security requirements of the CSTO member states.

“Experts have assessed that the existing operational parameters of the base are sufficient to protect against current threats from the southern direction,” he emphasized.

The diplomat also noted that Russian military personnel stationed in Kyrgyzstan are successfully fulfilling their tasks, including assisting local law enforcement agencies in combating extremism, terrorism, drug trafficking, and organized crime. They also interact with units from other CSTO countries, as demonstrated during the command-staff exercises "Rubezh-2025," held in September last year in the Issyk-Kul region.

Sergey Vakunov added that the Russian Federation will continue to provide the airbase with modern samples of weapons and equipment.

He reminded that the joint airbase in Kant and Karakol was established over 20 years ago at the request of the Kyrgyz leadership in response to the threat of international terrorism emanating from Afghanistan, and has since played an important role in ensuring security and providing air support to the CSTO rapid deployment forces in the region.
