At the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina, there have been incidents where medals are breaking or detaching from their ribbons. In connection with this, the organizers have begun an investigation.
Two American athletes, Bri Johnson and Alice Liu, encountered this problem after receiving their gold medals. Johnson, the champion in women’s downhill skiing, noticed that her medal lost its ribbon due to a broken attachment while she was presenting it at a press conference. Alice Liu, competing in the team figure skating event, also shared a video on social media where her medal unexpectedly detaches.
A similar situation occurred with the German biathlon team: footage shows one athlete's medal slipping off the ribbon during a celebration at the hotel.
The organizers of the Games confirmed that they are continuing to investigate the causes of these incidents, despite the fact that the gold medals for the 2026 Olympics are of higher value than ever before.
