January 2026 became a record month for the number of magnetic storms
The first month of 2026 confirms forecasts that it will be the most active in terms of geomagnetic storms in the last ten years. In January, magnetic storms were observed on 10 out of 31 days — the highest figure in the entire 25th solar cycle and the largest number since September 2017.
As expected, the main source of storms in January was coronal holes. However, one of the strongest storms, which occurred from January 19 to 21, was caused by the frontal impact of a plasma cloud ejected by the Sun after an X1.9 class flare recorded on January 18.
At the beginning of February, only one magnetic storm was recorded.
