Every year, only 20 kilometers of water supply networks are replaced in Bishkek, which represents just 1% of the total volume. This was stated by the director of the municipal enterprise "Bishkekvodokanal," Chyngyz Jumaliev, at a meeting of the permanent commission of the city council.

He noted that the current tariff for cold water is 10.45 soms per cubic meter, while half a liter of a carbonated drink costs about 150 soms.

“The cost of water is indeed low. It is important to understand that resources are limited, and we cannot use them irrationally. We need to update the water supply networks and install water meters. This will help ensure water supply for the future for our grandchildren,” emphasized Chyngyz Jumaliev.
He also added that under the current tariffs, the enterprise will end 2025 with losses in its main activities.
“Electricity tariffs have increased, and security services have also become more expensive. The current tariffs do not cover expenses. To develop the 'Vodokanal,' we need additional funds in the amount of 500-600 million soms. We must consider the possibility of raising tariffs for the future of the capital,” he noted.

When deputy Kazybek Ergeshov asked how much the tariffs need to be raised, Jumaliev could not provide a specific answer, pointing to the need for coordination with the antimonopoly service.

“In 2023, there was already a tariff increase. At that time, the previous head of 'Bishkekvodokanal' promised to replace 40-50% of the old pipes. However, to this day, the issue of even 10-15% has not been resolved,” expressed the dissatisfaction of the deputy.

Chyngyz Jumaliev added that merely increasing tariffs will not fully renew the worn-out networks.

“It is necessary to support 'Vodokanal' and attract funds from the state budget,” concluded Kazybek Ergeshov.
