Throwing a coin into the Trevi Fountain in Rome is now only possible for a fee

New rules are in effect in Rome regarding access to the Trevi Fountain, known for its tourist charm and the tradition of throwing coins. According to Meduza, now there will be a fee of two euros to approach the fountain from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM.

Children under five years old, residents of Rome, and people with disabilities will not be required to pay. Additionally, access to the fountain will remain free during nighttime—from late evening to early morning.

According to forecasts from local authorities, the introduction of an entrance fee could generate between 6.5 to 20 million euros per year. These funds are planned to be used for the maintenance of the fountain and to pay staff wages.

At the same time, the coins that tourists continue to throw into the fountain will be donated to the charity organization Caritas di Roma, which helps those in need. Approximately 1.5 million euros worth of coins are extracted from the fountain each year.
