In Australia, the world's first clinical program dedicated to the use of personalized mRNA vaccines for the treatment of brain tumors in children and adolescents has begun, local media reports.

The initiative, named PaedNEO-VAX, aims to assist patients with the most severe forms of tumors, such as medulloblastoma, ependymoma, and high-grade gliomas, which do not respond to traditional treatment methods or have recurrences.

The project is being carried out with the support of the Australian government, which has allocated a grant of $2.578 million for this purpose. The treatment is based on the principles of precision medicine: whole-genome sequencing of tumor tissue is initially performed for each patient to identify unique genetic markers. Based on this data, a personalized set of targets is created, which will form the basis for the mRNA vaccine.

Clinical trials will start in the coming months and will be conducted in eight children's hospitals located in five states of Australia.
