The Winter Olympic Games in Italy will begin on February 6.
The President of the UN General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, addressed the conflicting parties with a call for a "mutual ceasefire" during the sports tournaments, referring to the ancient principle of the Olympic truce.
Baerbock emphasized: “The Olympic truce demonstrates that even in times of conflict, humanity can unite through sports. I urge all parties involved in armed conflicts to show determination and achieve a true mutual ceasefire during the Olympic truce.”
She also reminded of the ancient Greek practice of ekecheiria, which translates as "Olympic truce," and characterized it as "a sacred principle of the games."
The UN News Service reports that the General Assembly resolution indicates the need to observe the truce from the seventh day before the start of the Winter Olympic Games until the seventh day after the end of the Winter Paralympic Games.
“Friendly competition allows us to overcome differences,” Baerbock added.
She also noted that the upcoming Olympic Games will be the most gender-balanced in history.
Kyrgyzstan will be represented by two athletes at the Olympics:
- Timur Shakirov — alpine skiing (coach Igor Borisov);
- Artur Saparbekov — cross-country skiing (coach Alexander Levdansky).
They will participate in competitions in alpine skiing and cross-country skiing.
