After the COVID-19 pandemic, the poverty level reached 30%.

During a joint meeting of the parliamentary groups of the Jogorku Kenesh, Deputy Prime Minister Edil Baisalov reported that the current poverty level in Kyrgyzstan is approximately 25%.

He noted that during the COVID-19 pandemic, this figure rose to nearly 30%. Statistics from the middle of last year indicated that the poverty level was 25.7%, and it currently remains at a similar level.

According to Baisalov, citizens with annual incomes below 65,417 soms are considered poor in Kyrgyzstan. This category relates to monetary poverty.

“Poverty is increasing rapidly, while the decrease is happening slowly. Even despite the government's efforts, the reduction is only 2-3%,” he noted.

Additionally, the Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that there is also multidimensional poverty, which encompasses not only income levels but also access to education, healthcare, housing, and basic services.

He reminded that according to UN data, over 1 billion people worldwide live in conditions of multidimensional poverty. This issue was discussed at the recent World Bank global summit in Doha, dedicated to social issues.

Baisalov added that the issue of poverty remains one of the key problems, and the government plans to work on reducing this indicator to 15%.
