The Ombudsman Institute of the Kyrgyz Republic is concerned about the rise in new cases of oncology among children
According to the institute's press service, by the end of August 2025, about 60 young patients were receiving treatment at the NCMCH hospital.
The report expresses serious concern regarding the increase in new cases of cancer among children. While around 70 cases were registered in 2014, since 2023, their number has exceeded 200. The most common diagnoses include acute lymphoblastic leukemia, brain tumors, neuroblastomas, and nephroblastomas. This increase is attributed to both a real rise in incidence and improved diagnostics,” the statement notes.
Doctors also emphasize concern regarding the increase in cases of parents refusing to treat their children.
“Some families do not trust medicine and face financial difficulties. Due to religious beliefs, they often turn to mullahs and folk healers. There is a known case where parents took their child with leukemia out of remission and began using unconventional treatment methods. A year later, the disease returned, and the child passed away,” the center's doctors shared with human rights defenders.
As a result of the monitoring, ombudsman Jamilya Jamambaeva sent recommendations to the Cabinet of Ministers, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Health, and the State Enterprise "Kyrgyzpharmacy" to address the identified shortcomings.
She proposed developing a new strategy for the control and prevention of oncological diseases, as well as approving a comprehensive plan to combat oncology for 2025–2030. Jamilya Jamambaeva also insists on the need to allocate funds in the republican budget for the technical maintenance of medical equipment and to revise the conditions for purchasing medications for cancer patients.
