Sister of Chyngyz Aitmatov Appeals to the Public
She raised questions about the Osh events of the 90s, the writer's views on Islam, and the elections of Akaev
Roza Aitmatova, sister of the famous Kyrgyz writer Chyngyz Aitmatov and a distinguished educator of the Kyrgyz Republic, made a statement for a wide audience. This speech was a reaction to the rumors and accusations regarding her brother that have appeared on the internet.
Expressing her concern about the numerous accusations, Roza Aitmatova urged the public not to use the writer's name in political and social conflicts.
She noted that attempts to blame Chyngyz Aitmatov for the events in Osh in the 1990s and his alleged one-sided political stance are unfounded. According to Roza, during that period, the writer was in Moscow, where he managed to meet with the President of Uzbekistan, Islam Karimov, and obtain a promise from him that troops would not be sent into Kyrgyzstan, which played an important role in preventing a large-scale conflict in Central Asia.
Furthermore, she pointed out that Aitmatov's participation in the presidential elections of Askar Akaev occurred at a time when the writer was not in the country.
Regarding the language in which the writer worked, Roza Aitmatova shared that Chyngyz began his literary works in his native Kyrgyz language, as he was fluent in it. The transition to the Russian language, she said, occurred under pressure from the Soviet authorities in the late 1950s. During this period, he received support from the poet Alexander Tvardovsky, who suggested that he publish in the magazine "Novy Mir".
Roza also emphasized that religious traditions were always highly valued in their family, and her brother respected Islam, performing the main rituals and sincerely believing in God.
“It is important to maintain unity and not succumb to provocations. The spread of rumors only leads to conflicts. One should neither elevate nor tarnish his name. May Chyngyz Aitmatov rest in peace,” she added.
