The statement clarifies that this award recognizes Aziza's efforts in the field of human rights protection, with particular attention to the rights of prisoners, freedom from torture, and the right to peaceful assembly.
“Aziza Abdirasulova is one of the first independent human rights defenders in Kyrgyzstan, who for many years documented cases of torture and arbitrary detention. She was not afraid to make facts public when it was easier to remain silent. In the context of global geopolitical changes and crises, her work reminds us of the importance of human rights defenders, as indicated by the Raoul Wallenberg Prize,” the statement emphasizes.
Raoul Wallenberg, a Swedish diplomat, used his position to save tens of thousands of Jews during the Holocaust. The prize named after him was established by the Council of Europe in 2014 and is awarded for outstanding humanitarian achievements by individuals, groups, or organizations.
