"We have rented out a plot of land underground for the first time"
The mayor of the capital, Aibek Junushaliev, recently spoke in an interview about the construction of an underground shopping complex and a three-story building on Chuy Avenue, next to the Central Department Store, as well as the disputes that have arisen around this project.
"This is truly a unique project for our city. We are renting a plot of land underground for the first time, and at the auction, its price reached 7 million soms per year. According to available data, the total cost of the project is about 2 billion soms. Implementing such initiatives requires significant effort, but I hope that the work will be completed within three months," noted Junushaliev.
At the same time, the mayor added that the construction of the building located opposite the clock tower is not taking place on municipal land. Therefore, the attention to the construction of the third floor was initially insufficient, but after public criticism, previous sketches were raised for comparison with the current state of construction.
It is worth noting that the new building is being constructed on the site where flower alleys and small kiosks used to be located. The "Old Bishkek" project has sparked much debate in society, as the actual execution differs from the concept previously presented by the mayor's office and builders. In this situation, the chairman of the State Committee for National Security, Kamchybek Tashiev, intervened and ordered the demolition of the third floor.
Initially, as reported by local authorities, it was planned to build an underground passage on the southeast side of the Central Department Store to solve the traffic congestion on Chuy Avenue caused by pedestrians. Later, it became known about the intention to construct an underground shopping complex, and then plans for building above-ground structures emerged.
