The issue of traffic jams in Bishkek is becoming increasingly relevant. In a podcast by the agency "Kabar," the city's mayor, Aibek Junushaliev, shared his thoughts on possible measures to combat this phenomenon.
According to the mayor, there are over 460,000 vehicles in the capital, which significantly exceeds the capacity of the existing infrastructure. Active measures to address the problem began back in 2024; however, he emphasized that this is not the only solution and a comprehensive approach is necessary.
Junushaliev also noted that expanding the road network is not merely an attempt to increase capacity. It is a step towards aligning the streets with the city's master development plan.
“Some roads have been built over with buildings that extend beyond the established 'red lines.' We are returning the roads to their original state, as planned,” he explained.
The mayor also added that after the completion of road repairs and the construction of interchanges, certain traffic restrictions will need to be introduced in the capital. He mentioned that the idea of restricting traffic on even and odd days was met with criticism and noted that society will need time to adapt to such innovations.
“In the future, it will be necessary to increase parking fees in the central part of the city. It should not be difficult for residents to choose between driving a car and using public transport. We aim for the use of public transport to become the natural choice: driving to the outskirts and taking the bus in the center,” Aibek Junushaliev concluded.
