According to the latest Leiden ranking, the world of science is undergoing significant transformation. This year, Harvard University, which has long held the top position among research institutions, has now dropped to third place.
The first place is taken by Zhejiang University, while Shanghai Jiao Tong University comes in second. These changes in the academic landscape highlight the impressive progress of China, where eight out of the ten leading universities are now in the top ten of the ranking.
The only representatives of Western institutions that remain among the top ten are researchers from the University of Toronto, alongside Harvard. Experts note that these changes demonstrate not only an increase in the number of publications but also a qualitative leap in Chinese science, which is confidently pushing traditional leaders from the USA and Europe out of the way.
The current situation poses serious challenges for American universities, indicating that the center of global intellectual production has definitively shifted to Asia.
