Cervical cancer kills every two minutes: WHO believes in victory over the disease

Every two minutes, one woman dies from cervical cancer, according to information provided by the World Health Organization (WHO).

WHO experts claim that this disease can be completely eradicated. To achieve this goal, it is necessary for 90% of girls to be vaccinated, 70% of women to undergo regular screening, and the majority of patients to receive the necessary treatment.

According to WHO data, cervical cancer is most prevalent among women who have limited access to medical services, especially in low- and middle-income countries. The highest rates of incidence and mortality are observed in countries in Southern Africa, Central America, and Southeast Asia.

Women with HIV have a six-fold higher risk of developing cervical cancer compared to those who are not infected.
WHO emphasizes the importance of early detection of disease symptoms. These include unusual bleeding between periods, after menopause or sexual intercourse, as well as heavy vaginal discharge, discomfort in the vaginal area, back pain, leg or pelvic pain, weight loss and loss of appetite, chronic fatigue, and swelling of the legs.

Women experiencing these symptoms are strongly advised to seek medical attention immediately.

If the diagnosis of cervical cancer is confirmed, it can be successfully treated, especially if detected at an early stage.

It has been previously reported that cervical cancer ranks second among the causes of death for women in Kyrgyzstan. The main factor contributing to this type of cancer is the human papillomavirus. Since 2022, the HPV vaccine has been included in the National Immunization Schedule of the republic.

Vaccination targets girls aged 11 years. January has been declared Cervical Cancer Awareness Month.
