Unmarried tourists banned from having sex in Bali

In 2026, Indonesia adopted a new Criminal Code that introduces a ban on extramarital intimate relationships. According to information from Reuters, the penalty for violating this law is imprisonment for up to one year.

These restrictions also apply to foreign tourists visiting popular places such as Bali. According to the new rules, only close relatives, such as spouses, parents, or children, have the right to file complaints about violations of family norms. This measure is part of a large-scale legal reform aimed at abolishing outdated colonial norms.
