According to the Bishkek Health Strengthening Center, there are about 8,000 registered cases of glaucoma in Kyrgyzstan. However, experts warn that the actual number of people with this condition may be significantly higher.
Glaucoma is a disease associated with increased intraocular pressure, which can lead to partial or complete vision loss.
The main risk factors include:
- age over 40;
- atherosclerosis and age-related changes in blood vessels;
- hereditary predisposition;
- inflammatory processes or eye injuries;
- diabetes.
In some cases, an acute attack of glaucoma may occur, characterized by a sharp deterioration in vision, severe eye pain that may radiate to the temple area, as well as nausea and vomiting. In such situations, immediate medical assistance is necessary.
In the early stages, glaucoma often proceeds asymptomatically, making early detection difficult.
Specialists recommend undergoing an annual check for intraocular pressure, which should normally not exceed 20 mm Hg.
