Russian doctors removed a 60-kilogram tumor from a man
According to information from the regional Ministry of Health, the tumor exerted serious pressure on the inferior vena cava and completely displaced the intestines, bladder, and other vital organs, occupying almost the entire abdominal cavity.
“A 50-year-old patient at the Sverdlovsk Regional Oncology Dispensary had a giant tumor weighing over 60 kg removed. His abdomen had been enlarging for about two decades without raising any suspicion of danger. Liposarcoma, a tumor arising from adipose tissue, is located outside the organs, making it difficult to diagnose: in the early stages, it masquerades as normal fat deposits,” the doctors reported.
Medical workers noted that the tumor had significantly increased in weight: at the first visit, the patient weighed approximately 150 kg, and just a month later, his weight had increased to 180 kg. The enormous size of the neoplasm compressed the inferior vena cava, displacing the intestines, bladder, and other organs, which led to the tumor filling almost the entire abdominal cavity. According to Vadim Golodnov, head of the abdominal oncology department at the Sverdlovsk Regional Oncology Dispensary, he encountered a tumor of such size for the first time in his 30 years of practice.
The surgery was conducted with a high risk of significant blood loss and thromboembolism. Given the complexity of keeping the patient in a supine position for an extended period, the doctors planned the positioning, intubation, and other technical aspects in advance. The complete removal of the giant liposarcoma took only 40 minutes.
