Life in the Regions: A Bullet in the Seat of a Honda - How One Detail Helped Investigator Kurmanbek Kanybek Uulu from Osh Expose an Organized Crime Group
Kurmanbek was born on November 13, 1989, in the village of Kalinin, located in the rural district of Joosh in the Kara-Suu district of Osh region. He is the eldest of three children, with a younger brother and sister. He is currently married and raising three sons.
In his opinion, the fight against crime requires significant effort and is often associated with human casualties.
Justice and School Years
Kurmanbek began his path in law enforcement, being deeply outraged by the injustice he faced in school and society. This prompted him to choose the challenging path of working in law enforcement.
“Since childhood, I was troubled by the distortions in society. In school, for example, teachers often rejected my work, and I wondered why they were not satisfied with what I had. My parents always told me not to argue with teachers,” he recalls.
The Path to a Dream
Autumn 2003 became a turning point for Kurmanbek. After the eighth grade, he decided to enroll in a military educational institution, and his parents found him a military lyceum in Bishkek.
“I didn’t know what awaited me — it was real discipline. The first days were marked by strict routines and early rises. My parents were not around, and I learned to cope with everyday life on my own. This hardened my character,” he shares.
Ministry of Internal Affairs Academy
In 2007, Kurmanbek, not giving up on his childhood dream, enrolled in the Academy of the Ministry of Internal Affairs named after Ergash Aliyev after graduating from the military lyceum.
“It was not difficult to get into the academy, as I already had military training. Studying was easy, and I graduated from the academy in 2012,” he noted.
Work in the Sverdlovsk District
In the autumn of 2012, Kurmanbek began working as an investigator in the Sverdlovsk District Department of Internal Affairs in Bishkek, one of the most crime-ridden areas of the capital.
“The work was very intense, and we were not enough to handle all the crimes. I worked there for three years,” he says.
Moving to Osh
At the end of 2014, Kurmanbek moved to Osh and became an investigator in the Suyliman-Too police station.
“After the Sverdlovsk district, the work here seemed easier, and I was entrusted with serious cases,” he adds.
Invitation to the Main Investigative Directorate
In 2015, Kurmanbek received an unexpected offer to move to the main investigative directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
“The head of the investigative department of the southern region called me and offered to move to the GSU. I was surprised but agreed,” he recalls.

Investigation of a Robbery
At the main investigative directorate, Kurmanbek solved a serious robbery in which four men associated with an organized crime group were suspected.
“They robbed a currency dealer, taking 500,000 soms and 15,000 dollars from him. The victim was initially afraid to go to the police but eventually decided to do so,” he recounts.
During the interrogation, the suspects insisted on their innocence. However, the victim was able to recall details, including that he was taken away in a Honda Fit car. In the course of the investigation, Kurmanbek found out that the suspects did not have a car, but they had communicated with the owner of the Honda before the crime.
“I deceitfully summoned the car owner for questioning and found out that he had lent his car to one of the suspects. During the inspection of the vehicle, we found a bullet from a traumatic weapon, which became key evidence in the case,” Kurmanbek explains.
Transition to a New Department
After staff reductions, Kurmanbek was unemployed for a while, but soon found a job as an investigator in the control and methodological department of the Osh region's internal affairs directorate.
“I helped young investigators and reviewed complaints about their work. In 2017, due to family circumstances, I went to earn money in Russia and Europe for five years,” he shares.
The end of 2024 marked the time for Kurmanbek's return to service, where he began working again as a district police officer.
“After six months, I was offered to return to investigation, and now I help young investigators,” he concludes.
Prevention of a Butcher's Robbery
While working in the internal affairs department, Kurmanbek prevented a robbery of a butcher who was engaged in wholesale meat sales.
“In 2015, a group of young people, having learned about the butcher's financial situation, came to Osh with the intention of robbing him. Thanks to the operational work of the police, they were detained before they could carry out the crime,” he says.
