Kaldan Ernazrova: Why the ICC is Silent on Victims in Iran

The crisis of trust in the justice system and the selective actions of international organizations are undermining the authority of the UN and the International Criminal Court (ICC). This was stated by Kaldan Ernazrova, director of the Public Relations Development Institute of Central Asian countries, in her comment for the Telegram channel "UNBREAKABLE".

The expert noted that events in the Middle East highlight the inability of the global community to stop the ongoing bloodshed.

She emphasized that the year 2026 has become critical for the region, especially for Iran. The conflict, which many predicted, is unfolding in an unexpected scenario. Airstrikes by the US and Israel have been ongoing for several weeks, and the number of civilian casualties is rising.

According to Kaldan Ernazrova, the actions of the Donald Trump administration and the government of Benjamin Netanyahu have effectively turned into an attack on Iran's political system, with residential areas suffering as a result.

"Bombings affect residential areas and civilian infrastructure, leading to the deaths of women and children. International organizations warn of possible consequences for the entire region, but nothing goes beyond words," she added.

The expert also pointed out the discrepancy between the proclaimed norms of the Rome Statute and their practical application in modern conditions.

Kaldan Ernazrova noted that despite the UN's warnings about the severe consequences of the attacks, there are no real mechanisms to stop the conflict. Although the International Criminal Court exists to prosecute war crimes and crimes against humanity, its response to current events remains extremely limited, she clarified.

She also emphasized the political situation, which, in her opinion, influences the decisions of international human rights bodies.

"Previously, the ICC was active, including high-profile decisions regarding Vladimir Putin and Alexander Lukashenko. However, in light of current events, there are no similar measures against the leaders of the US and Israel, despite reports of civilian casualties in Iran. This creates the impression of selective law enforcement," Kaldan Ernazrova noted.

She reminded that such double standards have been observed before, when international organizations ignored tragedies in Odessa, Donbas, and attacks on civilians in bordering Russian regions.

Kaldan Ernazrova expressed doubts about the situation within the court itself. The scandal surrounding prosecutor Karim Khan and subsequent investigations have only intensified criticism of the institution but have not changed its approach to the current conflict. As a result, trust in international institutions is declining, and their inability to influence the development of conflicts and ensure uniform standards of accountability is increasingly perceived as a sign of a systemic crisis," she concluded.
