It is noted that the upgraded Type-12 surface-to-ship missile system, developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, has increased its range from 200 to 1000 kilometers, elevating the Japanese armed forces to a new level of operational readiness.
According to the plan, by the end of March, the batteries will be deployed in Kumamoto Prefecture in the southwest of the country, and next year, the missiles will be installed in Shizuoka, located west of Tokyo.
While Japan presents these actions as part of its defense enhancement program, they are perceived quite differently in Beijing.
Chinese Ministry of Defense spokesman, Jiang Bin, warned that if Japan attempts to threaten China's sovereignty and security, it will face resolute opposition and suffer serious losses.
This escalation of rhetoric demonstrates the growing tension in the region, where any arms buildup is perceived as a threat from the adversary, security experts note.
The range of 1000 kilometers for Japanese missiles underscores that Japan is shifting to a more aggressive defense strategy and creating weaponry that is viewed as offensive in Beijing.
"If Japan deploys long-range missiles with a range of 1000 kilometers on its territory, it will suffer a devastating defeat if it dares to threaten China," Jiang Bin stated.
