The United States is taking on the rotating presidency of the Security Council, and Melania Trump will be the first spouse of a president to lead a meeting. In her speech, she plans to discuss issues related to children, technology, and education.
“This is a historic moment as Melania Trump will chair a Security Council meeting for the first time as First Lady on the day the U.S. takes over the presidency,” noted the White House's permanent representative to the UN, Mike Waltz. “Let’s make the UN great again!”
Melania Trump's office stated that her speech will focus on the theme “Children, Technology, and Education in Conflict.” The emphasis will be on education as a means of promoting peace and tolerance on a global scale.
A UN representative noted that this will be the first time the spouse of a sitting world leader will chair a meeting of the Security Council, which consists of 15 members, as reported by Reuters.
Security Council meetings are typically conducted under the leadership of an ambassador or a high-profile member of the government of the country currently holding the rotating presidency.
