U.S. President Donald Trump is discussing with his advisors who could become his successor. Among the candidates are Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, reports the Axios portal.

According to the publication, Trump is increasingly interested in forming a tandem of these two politicians and is asking his advisors questions about who should take the key position.

“Trump's strategy for 2028 includes a Vance-Rubio tandem, with Vance at the helm. However, if Rubio were to become the leader, Trump would also be satisfied,” shared the opinion of one of the president's advisors, to whom Trump turned for advice regarding the future leader of the Republican Party.
According to the portal, Vance has a team of political advisors ready to support him if he decides to run for president in 2028. In contrast, Rubio does not have such an infrastructure, although he has already announced his readiness to support Vance.
“If JD Vance runs for president, I will be one of his first supporters,” Rubio noted in an interview given in 2025.

Nevertheless, Trump's advisors emphasize that the president does not plan to make a final decision on his successor to avoid distracting his team from current tasks and to prevent the impression of losing power.

At the end of January, Trump stated that the Republican Party has many potential candidates for the 2028 presidential election who can continue his policies. He highlighted Vance, Rubio, and Treasury Secretary Scott Besant.

Previously, Trump also suggested that Vance is likely to become the Republican candidate in the upcoming elections.
